Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are widespread in rural Bihar — driven by indoor smoke from cooking fires, occupational dust, untreated infections, and tobacco use — but inhalers, the cornerstone of modern treatment, remain underused. Many patients are still on tablets that don’t reach the lungs well, often because inhalers feel unfamiliar or unaffordable.

This camp paired clinical screening with practical demonstration. Patients who needed respiratory inhalers received them free, along with one-on-one coaching on how to use them correctly. A device that isn’t used properly delivers no medicine at all — so the teaching mattered as much as the giving.
